Summer is officially here! The last few days were surprisingly hot and sunny, and it looks like they are here to stay!
This weekend was absolutely fantastic, the sun was shining, the days have been long and warm, and the nights are cool and light. I just love this time of the year, when you spend the majority of your time outside, and feel the benevolent effects of the sun.
But when the weather is this hot, chances are also high that we might suffer from dehydration.
Staying hydrated is really important in summer, as we lose a lot of water and minerals as we sweat, and need to make sure we get enough electrolytes (such as potassium and magnesium) through our diet. When your body is dehydrated you might experience dizziness, lethargy, headaches and a loss of energy. And this is certainly not how you want to feel when the weather is this splendid!
So what can you do to make sure you are giving your body the hydration it needs?
Drinking plenty of water seems the obvious answer, but you can also stay hydrated in a more fun and tasty way as well. Fruits and veggies contain a lot of water, combined with vitamins and minerals, so make sure you eat lots of them during the day.
One of my favorite fruits to eat during summer is watermelon. About 90% of its weight is made up of water, so it will quench your thirst and will provide you with a good amount of lycopene as well. Lycopene is a carotenoid phytonutrient that’s especially important for our cardiovascular health, and an increasing number of scientists now believe that lycopene is important for bone health as well. Just make sure you consume your watermelon on an empty stomach and on its own, to prevent bloating.
A hydrating veggie I absolutely love in summer is the lovely cucumber. This underestimated veggie actually can provide you with some valuable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits, as it is really rich in phytonutrients. Also a source of potassium and magnesium, it is a good choice after sports. Make yourself some flavored water, and add a few cucumber and lemon slices to your water. I love adding some mint to it as well. You will be surprised how quickly this will go down on a nice warm day 😉
Another way I like to stay hydrated is by consuming coconut water. I love the taste of it! And it contains potassium, magnesium and manganese which are important for maintaining the electrolyte balance in your body.
Drinking raw juices is an excellent way to supply your body with the needed hydration through a vast range of vitamins and minerals. Raw juices are just always a good idea to consume. I am so happy to inform you that now you can order your fresh cold-pressed juices from my newly launched website www.gogusto.lu.
We prepare our juices with great care, using the best and freshest fruits and veggies we can find (BIO / organic wherever possible). Our cold-press juice extraction process is the most efficient way to retain a maximum amount of vitamins and enzymes from the nectar of your juice. This will ensure you get the maximum goodness of those fruits and veggies in our bottles. I look forward to you trying my juices. 🙂
To your health!
